Having a craving for shave ice but don’t have access to a local shave ice stand? Maybe you need something to cater to your sweet tooth late at night, or you’re having guests over for dinner and want to provide a dessert that sings a summer evening tune. Whatever the case may be, you can easily make homemade shave ice with just a blender and some fresh fruit.

How to Make Shave Ice

Shave ice is a really simple creation. You really only need freshly shaved ice and something to top it with. For your ice shavings, you can use a shave ice machine or your blender. The only caveat to using your blender is that you can’t put too much ice in at once. You want to only fill your blender halfway and then run it on the pulse setting for a few times, and then finish the ice shaving process at high speed until all the ice is shaved and no large solid chunks are left.

For best results, shave your ice as you are making and serving your shave ice. Trying to freeze your shaved ice doesn’t work well as it tends to freeze together, losing its loose and flaky consistency.

Toppings

When it comes to creating toppings for your shave ice, you have several options. The best way is to make your own toppings with fresh fruit. You can simply blend fresh fruit together, either one type or several, with some added juice. This will yield a fresh fruit concoction that is sure to be a smash.

Other alternative toppings include chocolate and caramel syrup, marshmallows, gummies, and hard candy. For a more sour fruit topping, try a Granny Smith apple.

Themed Shave Ice

You can also make themed shave ice treats such as s’mores or strawberry shortcake. To make a s’mores shave ice all you need is crushed graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate syrup. For strawberry shortcake, just crumbled bits of angel food cake and top with freshly blended and cut strawberries.

Homemade Fruit Syrup

Kick your shave ice game up a notch with a homemade fruit syrup. This will be a thickner adding to your topping repertoire that is sure to impress.

Here’s what you’ll need:

1 1/2 cups of fruit (strawberries, pineapple, etc)

2 Tbsp of lemon or lime juice

3/4 cup of water

3/4 cup of sugar

Here’s the step by step fruit syrup process:

Step 1: Blend your fresh fruit using your blender or food processor.

Step 2: Pour your blended fruit into a saucepan and add the lemon/lime juice along with the water and sugar. Cook this mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally until boiling. Turn heat down to low-medium heat and let simmer for five minutes.

Step 3: Next, let your syrup cool completely before straining with a fine mesh strainer. This will filter out any residual seeds and pulp.

Your homemade fruit syrups are now ready to serve or for refrigerated storage. When you are ready to enjoy, simply pour your syrup over your ice shavings.
